GRAVITATION

Effects of Space Ace Hotel Kyoto Grand Opening

Venue: Ace Hotel Kyoto

Dates: June 11, 12, 13, 2020

Six performances were conducted by five musicians and five dancers, each performing simultaneously in different spaces.

Concept: Effects of Space: Though it was a single piece, the audience could hear the music in five different spaces, experiencing various worlds depending on their relationship with the performers and the space. Paget listened to the performances of other musicians through the hotel’s sound system, conducted via iPad, and played percussion himself. The audience experienced a concerto where the soloist changed as they moved around. The theme of the piece was “Gravitation,” based on musical language developed with physicist Koji Hashimoto. The music transcribed the principles of gravity into musical scales and chords. The lyrics, written by Chris Mosdell, formed the structure of the performance in 11 parts. Each of the five spaces housed different dancers and musicians. The five participating dancers specialized in different genres such as Japanese traditional dance, butoh, and contemporary dance.
